Oriental Cockroach
The oriental cockroach is known also as a waterbug or black beetle. It can be found in all parts of the United States. The length of the oriental cockroach is about 1 1/4 inch for the female and about 1 inch for the male. Both have wings but cannot fly. The adults are dark brown and nearly black. The egg capsule is carried by the female for about 30 hours where it is either dropped are attached to a protected surface near a food source. The females will produce an average of 8 capsules containing about 16 to 20 eggs each and will hatch in about 60 days. Nymphs will molt 7 to 10 times and the stages usually take several months to a year to complete.
The oriental cockroach has seasonal development cycles. The most number of adults usually appear in late spring or early summer. If nymphs have not reached their maturity by late fall or early winter, their development slows and usually don’t reach maturity until early spring.
The oriental cockroach can be found in high moisture areas such as sewers and damp basements. They are usually located below ground level indoors. You probably won’t find them on walls or high in cupboards or on the upper floors of buildings.
Oriental cockroaches feed on all kinds of filth and other decaying organic matter. They can live for about a month without food but only about 2 weeks without water. In cold weather you will probably find the migrating indoors.
Smokybrown Cockroach
Smokybrown cockroaches are related to the American cockroach but can be distinguished by their smaller size, a little over 1 inch long and uniform mahogany color. Both males and females have wings longer than their bodies. The nymphs have long antennae that are white at the tip.
Females lay a dark brown or black egg capsule that contains about 24 eggs. Each female smokybrown cockroach produces about 17 capsules that are usually glued to a surface but sometimes can be seen lying around. The smokybrown cockroaches life span is shorter than that of the American cockroach. The smokybrown cockroach can live 200 to 300 days under room temperature.
The smokeybrown cockroach is somewhat restricted in its distribution across the United States. It is common throughout Texas and eastward along the Gulf coast. It can be found throughout Florida and up the eastern seaboard and may be present in some areas of southern California. It is only found in the northern United States when it is brought in.
The smokybrown cockroach normally feeds on plant material but will feed on almost anything other cockroaches feed on. It can be found in gutters, attics and other areas around the home.
Brownbanded Cockroach
The brownbanded cockroach is one of the smaller cockroaches about 1/2 inch long. It is light brown and can be distinguished from the German cockroach by to lighter transverse bands running from one side to the other. The bands may be irregular or broken and are more apparent on the young and females than the males. Both the male and female brownbanded cockroach are quite active and the adult male my fly when disturbed. All stages of the brownbanded cockroach may jump when trying to escape. You will normally find the brownbanded cockroach in the same buildings as the German cockroach. Due to these two cockroaches looking almost the same,
mis-identification is possible. The female has a broader body than the male.
The female brownbanded cockroach carries her egg capsule for a day or two and then attaches it to a protected surface. The egg capsule is purse shaped, light brown in color , and cemented in place, usually to the side or under surfaces of infested objects. Females will produce about 14 egg capsules during their adult life, each containing about 18 eggs. The eggs will hatch in about 50 to 75 days. Nymphs mature in about 160 days. Adults can live up to 10 months.
The brownbanded cockroach can be found high on ceilings or walls, behind pictures, near motors of refrigerators and other appliances. They can also be found in closets, furniture and light fixtures. The brownbanded cockroach does no require as close an association to moisture and the German cockroach. This is why they are found in rooms other than the kitchen and bathroom. The brownbanded cockroach does not like light and is not normally seen during the day.
The brownbanded cockroach likes starchy materials but it can be found feeding on almost anything.
The brownbanded cockroach as well as the German cockroach can be transported in furniture and will rapidly spread throughout a building or home. There are many in the southern states but have been found as far north as Canada. In the cooler northern states they are generally found in the warmer parts of buildings.
German Cockroach
The German cockroach is probably the most economically important pest. It is the most common cockroach you will find in a home or business. The German cockroach can be found in homes, apartments, hotels, motels, restaurants and other places throughout the United States and other countries. There are other cockroaches that might be found more in the southern areas of the country but the German cockroach is by far the most common species infesting homes and other areas.
The adults are about 1/2 to 5/8 inches long and have two dark stripes. Both sexes have wings but do not fly. Males can be distinguished from females by a tapering shape of the abdomen.
German cockroach babies, called nymphs, look like adults except they are smaller, have no wings and are darker in color, sometimes even black. One stripe running down the middle of the back is a prominent marking of the younger German cockroach nymph.
The female German cockroach carries the egg capsule protruding from her rear until the eggs are ready to hatch. The German cockroach is the only house-infesting species that carries the eggs capsule this long. This is what makes it the most presistant cockroach in the United States because they are less likely to be taken by predators.
The adult females can produce 4 to 8 egg capsules in their lifetime. Each capsule contains 30 to 48 eggs. It usually takes 20 to 30 days from the time of initial formation of the first egg capsule until it hatches. There are 6 to 7 nymphal stages, called instars, until they molt into the adult stage. The nymphs have habits as adults. They are mostly active at night and hide in cracks and crevices during the day. Seeing German cockroaches during the day is usually an indication of over population. All cracks and crevices are full or food is in short supply and they are stressed.
German cockroaches usually hide in areas where there is ample food and moisture such as kitchens and other food areas but they can be found in other areas if they are stressed and as a result of a repellant insecticide somewhere else in the building or home. German cockroaches are attracted to fermented foods and beverage residues. If water is present, adults can live about a month without food, but young nymphs will die of starvation within 10 days. Without food or water the adults will die in about 2 weeks.
In apartment complexes or duplexes sharing the same common plumbing lines, infestations can occur in both apartments or duplexes. Treating these areas is a must with insecticides or dust formulations injected into walls of adjoining apartments.
American Cockroach
The American cockroach is also known as the waterbug and in some areas of the United States, the palmetto bug. The American cockroach is the largest of the common species and usually grows to about 1 1/2 inch or more in length. Its color is reddish brown with a pale brown or yellow border. As you can see from the photo it has a yellow band across its head. Both sexes have well developed wings but the males wings extend beyond the abdomen.
The female American Cockroach drops her egg capsule about a day after it is formed. This egg capsule can be dropped near a food source or other protected area. In the southern United States this egg capsule can be found in a moist area near decaying wood. The egg capsule may be glued to a suitable surface with secretions from the female’s mouth. Egg capsules are formed at about 1 per week until about 15 to 90 capsules are produced. Each capsule can contain about 14 to 20 eggs.
The nymphs are grayish brown and molt 9 to 13 times before reaching maturity. The nymph stage varies from about 150 to 900 days. The adult female, under ideal conditions, can live 14 to 16 months. Males live for a shorter period.
Nymphs and adults are usually found in warm moist areas. Areas like basements, crawl spaces, around bathtubs, floor drains and sewers. In the south the American cockroach can be found in yards, hollow trees and moist shady areas. They can also be found around foundations and swimming pools and wood piles and even in attics. When conditions are unfavorable, the American cockroach and other species can move indoors for food and shelter.
American cockroaches will feed on almost anything but prefer decaying organic matter. The American cockroach will also feed on book bindings, clothing and starchy items. Sweets are also attractive to the American cockroach. They can survive two or three months without food but will die in about a month without water.
The adults have well developed wings but seldom fly but they may be active fliers if conditions and temperatures are correct.
Cockroaches

Pest Control
Pest control is not an exact science. Sometimes it’s very hard to figure out your bug problem and how to treat the bugs. It depends on what type of insects we are dealing with. One of the hardest insects I have found to get rid of are “pharaoh ants”. Carpenter ants can also be a problem depending on where they are located. It may take several trips to your home to finally extinguish your problem.
Don’t expect one treatment to last. It may take several treatments on your home. It also depends on how long this problem has been going on, how long you have been letting it go without treatment. Some insects such as German cockroaches can take up to six mounths to get under control. If you let German cockroaches stay for too long than the longer they stay the longer it takes to extinguish them. I’ll discuss German Cockroaches in more detail in another page.
When calling a pest control professional to your home, make sure you call one you can trust. I have seen too many fly-by-night pest control companies pop up during certain times of the year especially during termite swarm season. Beware on who you hire.
