There are 5 basic types of cockroaches that can enter our homes in the United States. From small to large these cockroaches cause much havoc. Many homeowners will pay 100’s of US dollars to get rid of these creatures.
The word cockroach comes from the Spanish word cucaracha which means “crazy bug”. The droppings and body parts of cockroaches and other pests are known to cause asthma in certain persons. Cockroaches are commonly found in crowded cities and the southern regions of the United States. Cockroach allergens likely play a significant role in asthma in many inner-city areas.
There are some steps you can take to prevent cockroaches in your home.
- Do not leave food or garbage out
- Store food in airtight containers
- Keep dishes cleaned
- Repair plumbing leaks and other moisture problems
- Seal all cracks and crevices around your home
- Remove all clutter such as old boxes and newspapers
- Exclusion is the best policy
When treating for cockroaches try using baits and dusts instead of sprays. If you must spray, limit spraying to infested areas only. Always read the label on the product you will be using. Reading the label is for your safety. Make sure you wash your hands after spraying and do not spray where food is stored or prepared.
